How to Increase Thumbnail Resolution on Blogger

Posted On // Leave a Comment
When we add a widget on Blogger, the thumbnails will keep a default size of 72 x 72px which might not look good if we try to make them bigger using only CSS. However, with a bit of JavaScript we'll be able to replace the thumbnail with the same image of higher resolution and this way, larger images will no longer appear blurry.

In this tutorial we will see how we can replace the default thumbnail size of the popular posts widget but we can apply this trick on any of the blog widgets.

See a demo HERE.

Changing the Thumbnail Size for the Popular Posts Widget

Step 1. First, let's add the Popular posts gadget by going to Layout > click on the Add a gadget link and select Popular Posts from the popup window.

Step 2. Go to Template > click on the Edit HTML button > click anywhere inside the code area and press CTRL + F keys to open the Blogger search box

Step 3. Type or paste the </head> tag inside the search box then hit Enter to find it. After you found the </head> tag, add this CSS above it:
<style type='text/css'>
.PopularPosts .item-thumbnail a {
clip: auto;
display: block;
height: 130px;
margin: 0 0px 5px;
overflow: hidden;
width: 210px;
border: 2px solid #EEEEEE;
border-radius: 20px;
}
.PopularPosts .item-thumbnail img {
position: relative;
top: -30px;
transition:all .2s linear;
 -o-transition:all .5s linear;
-moz-transition:all .2s linear;
-webkit-transition:all .2s linear;
}
.PopularPosts .item-thumbnail img:hover{
opacity:.6;
filter:alpha(opacity=60)
}
.PopularPosts .widget-content ul li {
background: #F9F9F9;
border: 2px solid #EEEEEE;
border-radius: 10px;
box-shadow: 0 4px 10px #EEEEEE;
color: #555555;
padding: 10px;
margin-bottom: 5px;
}
.PopularPosts .item-title {
font: 14px Cambria,Georgia, sans-serif;
color: #2288BB;
font-weight: bold;
text-transform: uppercase;
text-align: center;
}
.PopularPosts .item-snippet {
display: none;
}
.widget .widget-item-control a img {
height: 18px;
width: 18px;
}
</style>
Step 4. Search for the </body> tag and just above it, add this script:
<script type='text/javascript'>
function changeThumbSize(id,size){
var blogGadget = document.getElementById(id);
var replacement = blogGadget.innerHTML;
blogGadget.innerHTML = replacement.replace(/s72-c/g,"s"+size+"-c");
var thumbnails = blogGadget.getElementsByTagName("img");
for(var i=0;i&lt;thumbnails.length;i++){
thumbnails[i].width = size;
thumbnails[i].height = size;
}
}
changeThumbSize("PopularPosts1",210);
</script>
What I highlighted in red is the widget ID for the Popular Posts gadget - to change the thumbnails size for any of your blog widgets, first you need to find the gadget/widge ID and then add a line below this part:
changeThumbSize("PopularPosts1",210);
changeThumbSize("widget-ID-HERE",210);
 ... and replace widget-ID-HERE text with the ID of that widget/gadget.

Note: you'll not be able to see the changes if the widget has a class selector - for this you will need to change class with id and replace the dot "." symbol with "#" within the CSS...

Step 5. Finally, Save the Template.

How to Use Character Entities in CSS, HTML and JavaScript

Posted On // Leave a Comment
Sometimes, when using scripts, we must write special characters like accents by using a special set of codes called character entities, however these don't always look good or we get a question mark or other strange symbols. Usually, this is solved if the character encoding is done right but the logic may not always work.

In Blogger, special characters most of the time appear correctly, but when it is about other services, like external files, things can get complicated.

For example, this usually looks good and when you click on this link, you should see the letters in the right way:
alert(" á é í ó ú  ☺ ✛ ❤ ");
If we are trying to use other method and we want to use this type of characters, sometimes we need to write them in a special format called escape sequence which is nothing but a backslash followed by a letter and a number in hexadecimal format. In the case of common characters or accents, it would be \x followed by two hex digits:
\xe1 is the letter á
\xe9 is the letter é
\xed is the letter í
\xf3 is the letter ó
\xfa is the letter ú
Other combinations generate special characters:
\n is a line break
\t is the tab character
\' is single quote
\" is double quote
\\ is a back slash
Or we can use \u followed by the Unicode character code expressed as four hexadecimal digits:
\u00e1 is the letter á
\u00e9 is the letter é
\u00ed is the letter í
\u00f3 is the letter ó
\u00fa is the letter ú
this will allow us to see correctly what we couldn't before if we were using some other services:
alert(" \u263a \u2764 \u271b ");
On this page you can find a comprehensive list of all the characters, both symbols and different alphabets.
Although rare characters are not often used in the CSS, there is a case when they are necessary as well, like when using the content property with the :after and :before pseudo-elements.

The same criteria applies there, but we only need to add a backslash followed by the four-digit hexadecimal code. For example:
content: ":\24d1\24d4\24d5\24de\24e1\24d4";

content: ":after  \263a  \2724  \2602";
:ⓑⓔⓕⓞⓡⓔ
:after ☺ ✤ ☂

Remember that IE doesn't understand the :before pseudoclass with content, and you would have to set the list-style-type property as none, or you would get 2 bullets in CSS compliant browsers.

Floating Social Share Buttons for Blogger

Posted On // Leave a Comment
Floating Social Share Buttons for BloggerThis tutorial will help you in adding Floating Social share buttons under every post of your blogger blog. I personally use this widget in my blog.

The widget is light in size and looks elegant. In every post after scrolling the widget will pop up at the lower bottom of the screen. The widget contains four social sharing buttons - Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn.  There is a close button too to close down the floating share buttons.

A live demo can be seen on my blog itself. Just scroll down to the comments section and this floating social share buttons bar will appear. You can also close it by clicking the close button.

Once you have seen the demo to add this widget in your blog just follow the below steps.

Adding the HTML/CSS/JS in HTML Editor

To add this widget you have to go to Blog Title → Template → Edit HTML and add the below given code just above </body>. The code has been optimized and made lite so it loads faster.

     <b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == &quot;item&quot;'>
    <script src='https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/76401970/All%20Blogger%20Tricks/abt-social-share.js' type='text/javascript'/>

    <div style='width: 800px; margin: 20px auto;'> <a class='boxclose' id='boxclose'/>
<style>

Animated Page Loading Effect for Blogger

Posted On // Leave a Comment
Loading Effect Blogger
Every blogger wants his blog to look best among his competitors blogs. This widget will add a bit more chunks of awesomeness in your blog.

The concept of this widget is simple. This is more or less like Exit Effect we add in Microsoft Powerpoint's Custom Animation. Just like that whenever the visitors will click any link to leave the current page, inspite of the old boring loading it will have animation.

A live demo can be seen on my blog itself. Just click any link here and you could see the change.

To add this effect to your blog do the following things.

Adding the HTML and Script

Add the below given code just above </body>.
<style>
#abt-page-loader {
        position: fixed!important;
        top: 0;
        right: 0;
        bottom: 0;
        left: 0;
        z-index: 9999;
        background:#000 url('https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFExxtC60dvnuNGnnSKYsFOmJrFwmQmWNIjc5onrrz7ofabw1rpIOkVNsk3RLedhUo5n6XCXdePZdHVoGOBYG4bP5e7vf5YyvX6JzZMzZ3-kmpt1uwUD6ONqRJwrkKtPThQL8UaI_SWxg/s200/load6.gif') no-repeat 50% 30%;
        color: #FFF;
        display: none;
        font: 0/0 a;
        text-shadow: none;
        padding: 1em 1.2em;
}
</style>
<script type='text/javascript'>
//<![CDATA[
$(document.body).append('<div id="abt-page-loader">Loading...</div>');
$(window).on("beforeunload", function() {
    // ... Show the Animation `.fadeIn()`
    $('#abt-page-loader').fadeIn(1000).delay(6000).fadeOut(1000);
});
//]]>
</script>

After adding this code, save the template.

You are done now. Now you and your visitors can see this awesome and cool Animated Page Loading Effect in you blogger blog.

Tabbed Table of Contents for Blogger

Posted On // Leave a Comment
Table of Contents
Table of Contents is what every blogger likes to add to his blog. It helps in decreasing the bounce rate of the blog and increasing the pageviews.

Today I am going to show you how you can add an amazing Table of Contents widget to a page of your blog. This widget is made by Taufik Nurrohman of DTE. The concept of this widget is very simple. It is coded with the help of JavaScript and CSS. It also has many options and setting which I will describe below.

A live working demo of this widget can be seen by clicking the below button.

Live Demo

After seeing the demo if you wish to add this widget in your blog then follow the below steps.

Step 1 : Creating a New Page

First of all we need to create a new page and to do this firstly go to Blog Title → Pages → New Page → Blank Page. Page editor will open, now click on HTML tab.

Step 2 : Adding the code

Once you are in the HTML tab of Page Editor add the below code in it.

<link rel="stylesheet" href="http://reader-download.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/tabbed-toc-skin.css" type="text/css" media="screen" />
<div id="tabbed-toc"><span class="loading">Loading...</span></div>
<a style="display:block;text-align:right;font:normal bold 8px Arial,Sans-Serif;text-decoration:none;margin:10px;" href="http://www.allbloggertricks.com/" title="Tabbed TOC">All Blogger Tricks</a>
<script type="text/javascript">
var tabbedTOC = {
    blogUrl: "http://your-url.blogspot.com", // Blog URL
    containerId: "tabbed-toc", // Container ID
    activeTab: 1, // The default active tab index (default: the first tab)
    showDates: false, // `true` to show the post date
    showSummaries: false, // `true` to show the posts summaries
    numChars: 200, // Number of summary chars
    showThumbnails: false, // `true` to show the posts thumbnails (Not recommended)
    thumbSize: 40, // Thumbnail size
    noThumb: "http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vpCFysMEZys/UOEhSGjkfnI/AAAAAAAAFwY/h1wuA5kfEhg/s72-c/grey.png", // A "no thumbnail" URL
    monthNames: [ // Array of month names
        "January",
        "February",
        "March",
        "April",
        "May",
        "June",
        "July",
        "August",
        "September",
        "October",
        "November",
        "December"
    ],
    newTabLink: true, // Open link in new window?
    maxResults: 99999, // Maximum post results
    preload: 0, // Load the feed after 0 seconds (option => time in milliseconds || "onload")
    sortAlphabetically: true, // `false` to sort posts by published date
    showNew: 7, // `false` to hide the "New!" mark in most recent posts, or define how many recent posts are to be marked
    newText: " - <em style='color:red;'>New!</em>" // HTML for the "New!" text
};
</script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://reader-download.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/tabbed-toc.js"></script>

Copy and paste the above given code in the post editor.

Step 3 : Table of Content Settings

 Now change the URL in the blogUrl field. You may change other settings. It is briefly described in the code what they are and how to change them. After making the changes save the page.

You are done now. Now you can link the page wherever you want. You and your visitors may now see this amazing table of content in your blogger blog.

This slider crawls and lists the recent posts of the blog. This widget looks somewhat like the one seen on engadget.com. This slider is very attractive and eye-catching too.

A live working demo of this widget can be seen below.

After adding the code change the URL in Bold Purple in the field blogURL with your own blog's URL. There are other options too for advance users.
After editing the code, save the widget and finally save the template.

You are done now. Now you and your visitors can see this awesome slider in your blog.

How to Stop Blogger Country Specific Redirection

Posted On // Leave a Comment

Blogger is a vast blogging platform with millions of blogs hosted on it. So some time before Blogger introduced Country Specific Redirection. For example a visitor from India who visits your blog by entering the URL abc.blogspot.com will be redirected to abc.blogspot.in. Blogger introduced Country Specific URL to provide better support to local blogs. Today I am going to show you how you can stop this redirection.

Before that you must be wondering that why should you stop redirection. The answer is simple. After redirection is on, you lost your Alexa ranks and the Pagerank juice too. This is not healthy for your blogger blog. So to remove the Redirection follow the steps given below.

Adding the JS

We will need to add JavaScript which will stop redirection. So to add this script firstly go to Blog Title → Template → Edit HTML. Press Ctrl + F and search for <head> and paste the below given code just below it.

<script type='text/javascript'>
var blog = document.location.hostname;
var slug = document.location.pathname;
var ctld = blog.substr(blog.lastIndexOf("."));
if (ctld != ".com") {
var ncr = "http://" + blog.substr(0, blog.indexOf("."));
ncr += ".blogspot.com/ncr" + slug;
window.location.replace(ncr);
}
</script>

After adding the code save the template.

You are done now. Now whenever a person tries to visit your blog, inspite of being redirected he will be at the original blog URL.

How to block Adblocker users in your Blogger blog

Posted On // Leave a Comment

Ad-blocker is an extension available on major browsers which blocks the advertisements which appear on Facebook / Google / Youtube and all small and big website/blogs. Ad-blocker currently has millions and millions of users. Bloggers work hard to provide services to their visitors and in return they too should get something and this extension is actually the road block in the path.

Due to Ad-blocker the ads don't reach some of the visitors and thus there would be no money no matter how much large user base you have. So in order to block Ad-blocker users, you just have to add a small piece of code. When any Ad-blocker user visits to your blog he will be redirected to a page which will instruct him/her to disable the extension and visit the page again.

There are many pros and cons of this plugins.

Pros -

1. You will have more income as ads are visible to all.
2. After adding Ad-blocker the UI of the website changes to an extent. After adding this plugin all can see the actual page.

Cons-

1. Bounce rate is going to be much higher
2. You may loose visitors.

A bloggers main job is helping others and not making money so I would personally recommend not to use this plugin. But if you think that you are not getting anything for the things you have been providing to your visitors you may add this plugins.

Adding the Ad-blocker Blocker

First go to Blog Title → Template → Edit HTML. Press Ctrl + F and search for </body> and paste the given code just above </body>.

<div id="abt-adblock-container">
<script type='text/javascript'>
//<![CDATA[
document.write('<\/SCR'+'IPT>');
//]]>
</script>
</div>
<script type='text/javascript'>
//<![CDATA[
if (document.getElementById("abt-adblock-container").clientHeight < 11 || document.getElementById("abt-adblock-container").style.position == "absolue") {window.location = "http://www.techigeek.com/abt-adblocker-blocker.html";}
//]]>
</script>

After adding the code save the template.

You are done now. Now whenever any Ad-blocker users come to your block he would be forced to disable the extension to see the contents of your blog.

Add the below given code just above ]]></b:skin>

.avatar-author{float:left;margin-right:10px;border:0;border-radius:50%;padding:0;width:30px;height:30px}

Step 2 : Adding Script

Find </head> and add the below code just above </head>

//]]>
</script>

Step 3 : Final Configuration

Finally search for <b:if cond='data:post.title'> and add the below code just above it.

Fully Automated Slider for Sidebar of Blogger

Posted On // Leave a Comment

So today I am posting a widget which I personally like too much. This widget is somewhat like the previous Featured Post widget I have posted but totally different in functioning. You can add this slider to your Sidebar. You just have to do 1 time customization unlike the previous widget. It is fully automated you just have to enter your blogs URL and the slider will keep updating the posts.

This widget is somewhat different. We normally use Sidebar for adding widgets like Popular Posts, Labels, Like box etc. but this time we would be adding a slider to the sidebar. This widget contains number of effects including Hover effect, Transition effect etc. You can change the number of slides to be shown. You can change the posts displayed for a specific label i.e. if you want to show only of a specific label you can by changing the settings.

To see the live demo of this widget click the button below and look at the right sidebar.

Live Demo

Adding the HTML/CSS/JS
