How to add a thumbnail image/photo gallery in Blogger

Posted On // Leave a Comment
For those who would like to show pictures in an image gallery, here's a gallery made with JavaScript and CSS that includes some thumbnails with which you will be able to pick different images on mouse click.

With the help of CSS, we can then place the <img> element to make it appear at the same position for each thumb and we'll be able to style the thumbnails as small blocks with a defined height/width. The script will add a click-event for each <li> object that changes it's child's <img> visibility and assigns an "active" class name to the <li>.

How to Add Image Gallery with Thumbnails to Blogger

Step 1. Log in to your Blogger dashboard, go to Template > Edit HTML

Step 2. Click anywhere inside the code area and press the CTRL + F keys to open the Blogger search box

Step 3. Inside the search box type </head> and hit enter to find it.

Step 4. Now pick one of the styles below that you like the most, then copy the code associated with it:

Style 1

<style type='text/css'>
#image-gallery {display: none;}
  #jquery-gallery {padding:0;margin:0;list-style: none; width: 500px;}
  #jquery-gallery li {width:84px; height: 80px;background-size: 100%;-webkit-background-size: cover;-moz-background-size: cover; -o-background-size: cover;background-size: cover;margin-right: 10px; border: 3px solid #fff; outline: 1px solid #E3E3E3; margin-bottom: 10px;opacity: .5; filter:alpha(opacity=50); float: left; display: block; }
#jquery-gallery li img { position: absolute; top: 100px; left: 0px; display: none;}
  #jquery-gallery li.active img { display: block; border: 3px solid #fff; outline: 1px solid #E3E3E3; width:490px; max-height: 375px;}
  #jquery-gallery li.active, #jquery-gallery li:hover { outline-color: #DFDFDF; opacity: .99;filter:alpha(opacity=99);}
</style>

Style 2

<style type='text/css'>
#image-gallery { display: none; }
#jquery-gallery {padding:0;margin:0;list-style: none; width: 200px; }
#jquery-gallery li {background-size: 100%;-webkit-background-size: cover;-moz-background-size: cover; -o-background-size: cover;background-size: cover;margin-right: 10px; width: 80px; height: 80px; border: 3px solid #fff; outline: 1px solid #ddd; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px; opacity: .5;filter:alpha(opacity=50); float: left; display: block; }
#jquery-gallery li img { position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 200px; display: none; }
#jquery-gallery li.active img { display: block; width:370px; border: 3px solid #fff; outline: 1px solid #E3E3E3; }
#jquery-gallery li.active, #jquery-gallery li:hover { outline-color: #bbb; opacity: .99;filter:alpha(opacity=99);}
</style>
Note: The display: none; of the first ID (#image-gallery) is to prevent images appear with their actual size before they go inside the gallery container, this is while loading the code. In #jquery-gallery we have the width of the container for the thumbnails (200px), so that they display in two rows and for this we need to count the width of the thumbnail (80px) plus the margins between them. The left declaration of #jquery-gallery li img is to move the larger thumbnail that shows on mouse click so that it won't overlap with the smaller thumbnails.
Step 5. Paste the code that you copied earlier just above the </head> tag.

Step 6. Just above the same </head> tag, add this script:
<script type='text/javascript'>
//<![CDATA[
var gal = {
init : function() {
if (!document.getElementById || !document.createElement || !document.appendChild) return false;
if (document.getElementById('image-gallery')) document.getElementById('image-gallery').id = 'jquery-gallery';
var li = document.getElementById('jquery-gallery').getElementsByTagName('li');
li[0].className = 'active';
for (i=0; i<li.length; i++) {
li[i].style.backgroundImage = 'url(' + li[i].getElementsByTagName('img')[0].src + ')';
li[i].title = li[i].getElementsByTagName('img')[0].alt;
gal.addEvent(li[i],'click',function() {
var im = document.getElementById('jquery-gallery').getElementsByTagName('li');
for (j=0; j<im.length; j++) {
im[j].className = '';
}
this.className = 'active';
});
}
},
addEvent : function(obj, type, fn) {
if (obj.addEventListener) {
obj.addEventListener(type, fn, false);
}
else if (obj.attachEvent) {
obj["e"+type+fn] = fn;
obj[type+fn] = function() { obj["e"+type+fn]( window.event ); }
obj.attachEvent("on"+type, obj[type+fn]);
}
}
}
gal.addEvent(window,'load', function() {
gal.init();
});
//]]>
</script>
Basically what this script does is to look if there is any ID named "image-gallery" and get the different list items that may exist within it. These elements will be displayed as thumbnails and a function will decide what to do when they are clicked. So, each time we click on a thumbnail, the "active" class will be assigned and the thumbnail should be visible in a larger container.

Step 7. Save the changes by clicking on the Save template button.

And finally, here's the HTML code. This is a normal list with the image-gallery ID, enclosed within a DIV with a relative position to avoid side effects of other pre-existing positions.

Step 8. Paste the below HTML to where you want to display the gallery by going either to Layout and adding a new gadget (click on the Add a gadget link and choose HTML/JavaScript), or inside a post or page within the HTML section.
<div style="position:relative;">
<ul id="image-gallery">
<li><img src="IMAGE-URL1" /></li>
<li><img src="IMAGE-URL2" /></li>
<li><img src="IMAGE-URL3" /></li>
<li><img src="IMAGE-URL4" /></li>
<li><img src="IMAGE-URL5" /></li>
</ul>
</div>
Note: if elements on your page overlap with this gallery, you might need to add the height declaration after the position: relative; The value of height depends on the size of your gallery.

Example:
<div style="position:relative; height: 500px;">
Change IMAGE-URL1 with the image URL. If you don't know how to get the address of an image, see this tutorial: How to Upload Images and Get the URL

In case you need to add links to your images, add this HTML structure instead:
<div style="position:relative;">
<ul id="image-gallery">
<li><a href="page-URL"><img src="IMAGE-URL1" /></a></li>
<li><a href="page-URL"><img src="IMAGE-URL2" /></a></li>
<li><a href="page-URL"><img src="IMAGE-URL3" /></a></li>
<li><a href="page-URL"><img src="IMAGE-URL4" /></a></li>
<li><a href="page-URL"><img src="IMAGE-URL5" /></a></li>
</ul>
</div>
Again, here you need to replace the page-URL text with the URL of your page/post.

Save your widget or page and you're done!

Using JQuery + EasyDrag to Move Elements or Images by Clicking on Them

Posted On // Leave a Comment
This is one way to make your site more interactive so that readers can "play" with certain elements of the page being able to drag from one side to another within the container in which they are, i.e. can drag the images with a script that will allow them to move from one place to another within the blog.
Demo

You can see an example in this test blog

To create this effect on images

Login to your Blogger account, go to Template and click the Edit HTML button:

Click anywhere inside the template's code and press the CTRL + F keys to search for this tag:
</head>
Just before </head> paste the following scripts:
<script src='http://code.jquery.com/jquery-latest.js' type='text/javascript'/>
<script src='http://helplogger.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/jquery.easydrag.js' type='text/javascript'/>
Note: If you already have jquery, please remove the code in red.

Now when you want to drag an image, use this code inside the HTML of your post or of your page:
<img id="easydrag1" src="image-URL" style="border: 0px none; cursor: move;" />
<script type="text/javascript">
$(function(){ $("#easydrag1").easydrag();});
</script>
Change the URL of the image where is indicated, and furthermore, it is important that each image has a unique ID, in this example the ID is called easeydrag1, that ID must be twice.

If you have another picture with this effect, then you should put a different image with other ID, for example easydrag2, otherwise it will not work:
<img id="easydrag1" src="image-URL" style="border: 0px none; cursor: move;" />
<script type="text/javascript">
<img id="easydrag2" src="image-URL" style="border: 0px none; cursor: move;" />
<script type="text/javascript">
$(function(){ $("#easydrag1").easydrag();});
$(function(){ $("#easydrag2").easydrag();});
</script>
And how do you do if you want to put a link to the image?

We will set one Javascript function, so that when we will double click on it to open the page we want.

In this case, the code you would use, would be this:
<img id="easydrag1" style="cursor:move; border:0px;" ondblClick="javascript:window.open('link-URL')" src="image-URL" /><script type="text/javascript">
$(function(){ $("#easydrag1").easydrag();});
</script>
With this the picture can be without any problems dragged around and can be activated by double clicking on its link.

How to Add a Tiny jQuery Circleslider to Blogger

Posted On // Leave a Comment
Tiny Circleslider is a small jQuery plugin generating a circular carousel of images that we can slide infinitely (circular). When clicking on the red dot, the main picture moves to the left and another set of images will slide out. There is noting complicated about using this type of carousel, however when it's about customizing it, it's necessary to use a bit of arithmetic. All these details can be found in the author's homepage, so I'll just limit myself to show you the basics.

Demo

Click on the red dot, then move it along the circle:
jquery slider, image slider for blogger

Adding the Tiny Circleslider to the Blog

In order to make it work, first task is to add the javascript jQuery library in our template:

Step 1. From your Blogger's dashboard, select your blog

Step 2. Go to Template and click the Edit HTML button:

Step 3. Click anywhere on the code area and search by using the CTRL + F keys for this tag:
</head>
Step 4. Just above the </head> tag, add the following scripts:
<script src='http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.10.2/jquery.min.js' type='text/javascript'/>
<script src="http://helplogger.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/jquery.tinycircleslider.min.js"/>
Step 5. We need to add the CSS styles above the </head> tag, as well:
<style>
  #rotatescroll { /* is the rectangle container */
    height: 300px;
    position: relative;
    width: 300px;
  }
  #rotatescroll .viewport { /* is the rectangle containing the images */
    height: 300px;
    position: relative;
    margin: 0 auto;
    overflow: hidden;
    width: 300px
  }
  #rotatescroll .overview { /* is the list with the images */
    left: 0;
    list-style: none;
    margin: 0;
    padding: 0;
    position: absolute;
    top: 0;
  }
  #rotatescroll .overview li { /* each item of the list */
    float: left;
    height: 300px;
    position: relative;
    width: 300px;
  }
  #rotatescroll .overlay { /* the image with the circle overlapping the list */
    background: transparent url(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5E0mFH2LioW-Z93eUaoxayOcAk5p5MtTeaRXKm57oR6rxSabqgmw28OQENJtrzYSPXGKvmG4L1GLBPdUfBs_NQsNFaZM210cVdVjvl5bg25FkCycb2nnmBKUroO-mB_9wcWgPS02CkiNJ/s1600/bg-rotatescroll.png) no-repeat 0 0;
    height: 300px;
    left: 0;
    position: absolute;
    top: 0;
    width:300px;
  }
  #rotatescroll .thumb { /* the red circle that allows us to navigate */
    background:transparent url(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn9C_lSZRMQ3WhE0aX8Af84nSjo_dywq0rVMld4KPbFjp8xZed3UzDkvaqaDYJc5qzeNqwCjd6S5L016YiSQeRwH92UfbN-WbWhS194OExI-m1qjf5oT9IFVdDfOZtjOqeARTWrDE8bZn3/s1600/bg-thumb.png) no-repeat 0 0;
    cursor: pointer;
    height: 26px;
    left: 137px;
    position: absolute;
    top: -3px;
    width: 26px;
    z-index: 200;
  }
  #rotatescroll .dot { /* the points indicating the position of each image */
    background: transparent url(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM38uWDeKATaKwJsqqkFP4laQzbjqk7GMHzEZYqw1mS2v31QR_CRxfvuQptPeykUdZigODdy-nzM34doyGWarFn8Xb8JGEQr1Pqaepdc8iu0Qa-CNgg1nblkVKWdZtYqcahX958Hg2DoKw/s1600/bg-dot.png) no-repeat 0 0;
    display: none;
    height: 12px;
    left: 155px;
    position: absolute;
    top: 3px;
    width: 12px;
    z-index: 100;
  }
  #rotatescroll .dot span { /* are hidden by default */
    display: none;
  }
</style>
Screenshot
Step 6. Save the changes by clicking the Save Template button

Now here's the HTML that has to be added to where we want to display the carousel.
To add it inside a post the click the New post on the left side of your dashboard and paste the code below by going to the HTML tab:
<div id="rotatescroll">
  <div class="viewport">
    <ul class="overview">
      <li><img src="imageURL" /></li>
      <li><img src="imageURL" /></li>
      <li><img src="imageURL" /></li>
      <li><img src="imageURL" /></li>
      <li><img src="imageURL" /></li>
    </ul>
  </div>
  <div class="dot"></div>
  <div class="overlay"></div>
  <div class="thumb"></div>
</div>

<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function(){ $('#rotatescroll').tinycircleslider(); });
$('#rotatescroll').tinycircleslider({ interval: true, snaptodots: true });
</script>
blogger template
Screenshot

Note: replace the imageURL text with the URL of your images

and here are other options that could be added, separated by commas:

snaptodots - false if you want no dots to be shown when dragging them
hidedots - false if you want to display the internal points (by default is true)
intervaltime - is the time between slides (by default 3500)
radius - defines the size of the circle (by default is 140)
If you want to add it to your sidebar, simply go to Layout, click the Add a Gadget link > from the popup window, choose HTML/Javascript and paste the code inside the empty box.

Turn off the lights with jQuery

Posted On // Leave a Comment
For those who enjoy watching videos on the internet, this is a very useful script made with jQuery by Janko.

So what this script does? It will "turn off the lights" so that everything you have on the page will be fading to dark, less the video, so there will not be other elements that will distract us while watching a video and we will feel like watching a movie in a cinema.
You can see an example here by clicking on the link that says "Turn off the lights".

How to Add the Turn off the Lights Feature to Blogger/Blogspot

To put this effect of "lights" on the blog, just follow the steps below:

Step 1. Go to Template > Edit HTML

Step 2. Click anywhere on the code area and search for the following tag by pressing the CTRL + F keys:
</head>
Step 3. After you found it, paste the below script just above it:
<script src='http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.10.2/jquery.min.js' type='text/javascript'/>
<script type='text/javascript'>
//<![CDATA[
$(document).ready(function(){
$("#darkness").css("height", $(document).height()).hide();
$(".lightSwitcher").click(function(){
$("#darkness").toggle();
if ($("#darkness").is(":hidden"))
$(this).html("Turn off the lights").removeClass("turnedOff");
else
$(this).html("Turn on the lights").addClass("turnedOff");
});
});
//]]>
</script>
Note: if you already have one version of jquery added in the template, then remove the line in red.

Step 4. Now search for the ]]></b:skin> tag (click on the left arrow if needed (you may need and after the code has been expanded, search it again by using the CTRL + F keys)

Step 5. Just above it, add the following CSS styles:
/* Turn off the lights
----------------------------------------------- */
#lightsVideo {
position:relative;
z-index:102;
}
#switch {
max-width:640px;
text-align:left;
position:relative;
height:25px;
display:block;
margin: 25px 0 0 60px;
}
.lightSwitcher {
position:absolute;
z-index:101;
background-image:url(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBt5PiXw3xxZN1qooDCPEFwFFZIwtJz8rQnmuztXHUaOeAFuMioofo9jjc2YbKo3Ejpfr2MuLwgo2Uvs1XjvGnho5RaS0RHx4Xnxum8kEPi7j4qCijP-2cUfFmI9Sc1JxcmxS-d7PHM-Uw/s1600/lights-on.png);
background-repeat:no-repeat;
background-position:left;
padding: 0 0 0 20px;
outline:none;
text-decoration:none;
}
.lightSwitcher:hover {text-decoration:underline;}
.turnedOff {
color:#ffff00 !important;
background-image:url(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7QFiWFG9aZ3v5SJAaStbmZNQzqAkGKBa2MIywjCcmQqpwkSfYqDPawAAgTCAlGMuy3-7o5_QfRb2TA_22GaV8TVaTjvAN3u4uDJ_SBJyaCE-JVAuo-Ze362A8aIU-C2XunJU6lGpce7Of/s1600/lights-off.png);
}
#darkness {
background:#000;
opacity:0.8;
filter:alpha(opacity=80);
position:absolute;
left:0;
top:0;
width:100%;
z-index:100;
}
Click on the arrow to expand the styles
Step 6. Search the </body> tag and add this html code just above it:
<div id='darkness'/>
Step 7. Click the Save Template button to save the changes.

Now, wherever you put your video, either a post or a HTML/Javascript gadget, use this code:
<center>
<div id="switch"><a class="lightSwitcher" href="javascript:void(0);">Turn off the lights</a></div>
<div id="lightsVideo">
...Here goes the code of the video...
</div>
</center>
Add the code of your video to where is indicated and that's it. Now you can enjoy your videos with the lights off!
Remember that this trick uses jQuery, so if you use Scriptaculous or Mootools you should apply a patch, and if you use another version of jQuery, you must use only one.

Before/After Photo Effect with jQuery

Posted On // Leave a Comment
If you have a design or makeup blog, or if you are using before and after image comparison, this script will surely be very useful for you.

In this tutorial we'll learn how to add the Before/After plugin, a script that works with jQuery and displays two pictures dynamically for comparing them at the same time. By dragging sideways a small bar we can see both images that are being compared.

See this Brittany Murphy pic before and after photoshop:

before
after

Implementing this script is simple, we just need jQuery, the Before/After script, and the two images that we are going to compare.

How to add the Before/After plugin to Blogger

Step 1. Go to Template > Edit HTML and before </head> (CTRL + F to find it) paste the following:
<script src='http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.10.2/jquery.min.js' type='text/javascript'/>
<script src='http://http://code.jquery.com/ui/1.10.3/jquery-ui.js' type='text/javascript'/>
<script src='http://helplogger.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/jquery.beforeafter.min.js' type='text/javascript'/>
<script type='text/javascript'>
$(function(){
$(&#39;#beforeafter1&#39;).beforeAfter({showFullLinks : true});
});
</script>
Step 2. Click on the Save template button
Note: if the above script doesn't work for you, add it above the </body> tag. Also please verify if you have added jQuery in your template (if you did so, then remove the line in green)

Step 3. Go to Layout, add a HTML/Javascript gadget and paste this code inside the empty box:
<div id='beforeafter1'>
<div><img alt='before' src='URL of the first image' width='500' height='291'/></div>
<div><img alt='after' src='URL of the second image' width='500' height='291'/></div>
</div>
Add the URL of the first image that is the Before image, and the URL of the second image that is the After image.
It is important that you have specified the width and height of each picture so that they work on all browsers.
If you want to add more images just change the ID of the container, in this case the container is called beforeafter1 so you need to change it to beforeafter2 and so on, although you can choose any name as long as all are different.

And in the first code to paste, add another line like this one in blue:
<script src='http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.10.2/jquery.min.js' type='text/javascript'/>
<script src='http://http://code.jquery.com/ui/1.10.3/jquery-ui.js' type='text/javascript'/>
<script src='http://helplogger.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/jquery.beforeafter.min.js' type='text/javascript'/>
<script type='text/javascript'>
$(function(){
$(&#39;#beforeafter1&#39;).beforeAfter({showFullLinks : true});
$(&#39;#beforeafter2&#39;).beforeAfter({showFullLinks : true});
});
</script>
You can add as many before/after images as you like as long as all containers have a different ID and the corresponding lines are added in the script.
Below each photo container are the "Show only Before" and "Show only after" links that when you click on them, the complete pictures will be shown. If you want to hide these links, then just change true to false in the first code and they will not be displayed anymore.

Note: if you see white space around the drag icons, then search for this code in your template:
   <Group description="Images" selector=".main-inner">
     <Variable name="image.background.color" description="Background Color" type="color" default="#ffffff" value="#ffffff"/>
... and change the #ffffff value in red to transparent.

Page peel effect using jQuery

Posted On // Leave a Comment
Page Peel is a popular page flip effect that when your cursor is passing over it, will show "what's behind" as if it would be a book. There are many ways to do this, many of them use flash files which makes it less customizable, however, the one that we will see in this post is made with jQuery.

Usually, the content that is "behind", is an image for subscribing to feed, but you can put any image and link to any page.

page peel, blogger gadgets
Demo

You can see an example in this demo blog.

How to Add the Page Curl Effect on Blogger

1. Log in to your Blogger dashsboard, select your blog > then go to Template > Edit HTML

2. Click anywhere inside the code area and search for the below tag by pressing the CTRL + F keys:
</head>
3. Just before </head> copy and paste this script:
<script src='http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.10.2/jquery.min.js' type='text/javascript'/>

<script>
//<![CDATA[
$(document).ready(function(){
$("#pageflip").hover(function() {
$("#pageflip img , .msg_block").stop()
.animate({
width: '307px',
height: '319px'
}, 500);
} , function() {
$("#pageflip img").stop()
.animate({
width: '50px',
height: '52px'
}, 220);
$(".msg_block").stop()
.animate({
width: '50px',
height: '50px'
}, 200);
});
});
//]]>
</script>
4. Then before ]]></b:skin> (CTRL + F to find it - if necessary, click on the left arrow) paste these styles:
/* Page Flip
----------------------------------------------- */
#pageflip {
position: relative;
right: 0;
top: 0px; /* Change to 30px if you have the navbar (navigation bar) */
float: right;
z-index:9;
}
#pageflip img {
width: 50px;
height: 52px;
z-index: 99;
position: absolute;
right: 0;
top: 0;
-ms-interpolation-mode: bicubic;
}
#pageflip .msg_block {
width: 50px;
height: 50px;
overflow: hidden;
position: absolute;
right: 0;
top: 0;
background: url(http://oi44.tinypic.com/2hheno6.jpg) no-repeat right top;
}
#pageflipMirror {
position: static;
right: 0;
top: 0;
float: right;
}
5. Finally, paste after <body> tag or if you can't find it, after this code:
<body expr:class='&quot;loading&quot; + data:blog.mobileClass'>
The following code:
<div id='pageflip'>
<a href='http://name-of_your_blog.blogspot.com/atom.xml'>
<img src='http://oi40.tinypic.com/10fqnav.jpg' style='width: 50px; height: 52px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;'/></a>
<div class='msg_block' style='width: 50px; height: 50px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden; '/>
</div>
- In blue you will see a URL - this is the URL of the image that, in this case, is an invitation to subscribe to the feed. You can change it later to another (should be of the same size).
- You need to replace the url in red with the address of your blog, that will be the link to the blog's feed when the user clicks on the image behind, but you can put any URL in case you want to link to another page.

6. And that's it. To save the changes, click the Save template button.
Remember that this Page Peel effect uses jQuery, so you should only have one version of it, and if you use Scriptaculous or Mootools, you should apply some changes.

Customize the scroll bar (scrollbar) with JScrollPane

Posted On // Leave a Comment
JScrollPane is a jQuery script that allows you to change the blog' scroll bar, ie the browser scrollbar.
Although we can use CSS to change it, the problem is that is not standardized, because with CSS we can make it work only in Chrome and Safari; and in the case of Internet Explorer it also has its own code but obviously it only works in that browser (I don't know which versions). So what we will do then is to give a new look to the scrollbar but by using jQuery, so the change will be visible in all browsers.

Demo

You can see an example in this test blog where the scroll bar has a different shape and color.

How to change the scrollbar on Blogger

1. Go to Template > Edit HTML and before </head> paste this code:

.jspVerticalBar *,.jspHorizontalBar * {margin: 0;padding: 0;}
.jspCap {display: none;}.jspHorizontalBar .jspCap {float: left;}

.jspTrack {

<script>
$(document).ready(function() {

2. Then locate this tag:
<body>
Or this line:
<body expr:class='&quot;loading&quot; + data:blog.mobileClass'>
Under any of these two add this:
<div class='scroll-pane' id='blog-container'>
3. Finally search for the </body> and above it paste this:
</div>
Save the changes and that's all. In green you will see where you can change the scrollbar colors and its different areas, or add other styles, such as shadows, rounded corners, etc..
If you want the top and bottom limits to not appear (as in the example) then remove what is in red.

Remember that the script uses jQuery, so if you already have it, then don't put the script again (the first line of code). If you are using Scriptaculous or Mootools, then you should make some slight changes in order to make it work.

Maybe the code might appear long but better add the scripts directly in the template, so the scripts will always be available and load faster. Regardless of all of this the end result is quite aesthetic, don't you think?

Adding a Youtube Video in the Background of a Blogger blog

Posted On // Leave a Comment
Some of you might have wondered how to put a video to play in the blog's background, so that instead of having just a color or an image, to have a video. We can do this thanks to the jQuery plugin Tubular that lets you use a YouTube video as a background of a web page.

Although the result can be very original and attractive, I must say it has three drawbacks: they can not be silenced, if the video has ads, they will also appear, and it can slow the loading time of the blog, so if anyone wants to use it, may consider putting it only on special occasions, or on blogs that load very quickly.
Also it can be done in HTML5, the problem with this method is that you need to load the video in 3 different formats (.mp4, .webm and .ovg) along with a picture for browsers that do not support them, so this YouTube option seems more practical to me, despite the drawbacks.

blogger gadgets, blogger tricks, blogger widgets

You can see it working on this demo blog

Steps

1. The first step is to just above the </head> tag, this script:
<script src='http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.10.2/jquery.min.js' type='text/javascript'/>

<script type='text/javascript'>
//<![CDATA[
/* jQuery tubular plugin

|* Enjoy.
|*
|* Thanks,
|* Sean */

var videoWidth = 853;
var videoRatio = 16/9;
var defaultDiv = 'wrapper-video';

jQuery.fn.tubular = function(videoId,wrapperId) {
wrapperId = (typeof(wrapperId) == undefined) ? 'wrapper-video' : wrapperId;
t = setTimeout("resizePlayer()",1000);

jQuery('html,body').css('height','100%');
jQuery('body').prepend('<div id="yt-container" style="overflow: hidden; position: fixed; z-index: 1;"><div id="ytapiplayer">You need Flash player 8+ and JavaScript enabled to view this video.</div></div><div id="video-cover" style="position: fixed; width: 100%; height: 100%; z-index: 2;"></div>');
jQuery('#' + wrapperId).css({position: 'relative', 'z-index': 99});

var ytplayer = 0;
var pageWidth = 0;
var pageHeight = 0;
var videoHeight = videoWidth / videoRatio;
var duration;

var iframe = '<iframe id="myytplayer" width="' + videoWidth + '" height="' + videoHeight + '" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/' + videoId + '?autoplay=1&controls=0&modestbranding=1&showinfo=0&hd=1&iv_load_policy=3&version=3&wmode=transparent&loop=1&playlist=' + videoId + '" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>';

jQuery('#ytapiplayer').html(iframe);
jQuery(window).resize(function() {
resizePlayer();
});
return this;
}

function onYouTubePlayerReady(playerId) {
ytplayer = document.getElementById("myytplayer");
ytplayer.setPlaybackQuality('medium');
ytplayer.mute();
}

function resizePlayer() {
var newWidth = jQuery(window).width();
var newHeight = jQuery(window).height();
jQuery('#yt-container, #video-cover').width(newWidth).height(newHeight);
if (newHeight > newWidth / videoRatio) {
newWidth = newHeight * videoRatio;
}
jQuery('#myytplayer').width(newWidth).height(newWidth/videoRatio);
}

//]]>
</script>
And this one too:
<script type='text/javascript'>
//<![CDATA[
$().ready(function() {
$('body').tubular('61BLn00AN_w','wrapper-video');
});
//]]>
</script>
2. Then locate the <body> tag (CTRL + F)
Or if you are using a template from Template Designer, find this line:
<body expr:class='&quot;loading&quot; + data:blog.mobileClass'>
3. Under either of these two, add this:
<div id='wrapper-video'>
4. Now search for the </body> tag, and before it put this:
</div>
Save the changes and that's it. In red you must put the ID of Youtube video, the ID are the characters that appear at the end of the URL:

Remember: There is no option to mute, so if you don't want to have sound as in the demo blog, you have to choose a video that has no sound. I also recommend using a video in HD in case you don't want any black parts to show around it.

If you are using jQuery, remove other versions that you have to avoid duplication and have problems.

Create a Background Slideshow for Blogger

Posted On // Leave a Comment
In the previous post we saw how to make the blog's background fill the screen regardless of the resolution of the monitor. The method that we'll use now with jQuery is a plugin called BackStretch which also has the option of creating a slideshow of pictures as a blog wallpaper without losing the property of adjusting to the width and height of the screen.

slideshow for blogger, blogger widgets

What we will do in this entry is just this, try to make the blog's background to have some images that are changing, all with fade effect between each transition.
You can see an example in this demo blog.

To put this slideshow in the blog's background, just go to Template - Edit HTML and before </head> add the following code:
<script src='http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.10.2/jquery.min.js' type='text/javascript'/>
<script>
//<![CDATA[
/*
* jQuery Backstretch
* Version 1.2.8
* http://srobbin.com/jquery-plugins/jquery-backstretch/
* Add a dynamically-resized background image to the page
* Copyright (c) 2012 Scott Robbin (srobbin.com)
* Licensed under the MIT license
* https://raw.github.com/srobbin/jquery-backstretch/master/LICENSE.txt
*/
;(function(a){a.backstretch=function(p,b,l){function s(){if(p){var b;0==c.length?c=a("<div />").attr("id","backstretch").css({left:0,top:0,position:m?"fixed":"absolute",overflow:"hidden",zIndex:-999999,margin:0,padding:0,height:"100%",width:"100%"}):c.find("img").addClass("deleteable");b=a("<img />").css({position:"absolute",display:"none",margin:0,padding:0,border:"none",zIndex:-999999,maxWidth:"none"}).bind("load",function(d){var b=a(this),e;b.css({width:"auto",height:"auto"});e=this.width||a(d.target).width();d=this.height||a(d.target).height();n=e/d;q();b.fadeIn(g.speed,function(){c.find(".deleteable").remove();"function"==typeof l&&l()})}).appendTo(c);0==a("body #backstretch").length&&(0===a(window).scrollTop()&&window.scrollTo(0,0),a("body").append(c));c.data("settings",g);b.attr("src",p);a(window).unbind("resize.backstretch").bind("resize.backstretch",function(){"onorientationchange"in window&&window.pageYOffset===0&&window.scrollTo(0,1);q()})}}function q(){try{j={left:0,top:0},rootWidth=h=o.width(),rootHeight=r?window.innerHeight:o.height(),f=h/n,f>=rootHeight?(k=(f-rootHeight)/2,g.centeredY&&(j.top="-"+k+"px")):(f=rootHeight,h=f*n,k=(h-rootWidth)/2,g.centeredX&&(j.left="-"+k+"px")),c.css({width:rootWidth,height:rootHeight}).find("img:not(.deleteable)").css({width:h,height:f}).css(j)}catch(a){}}var t={centeredX:!0,centeredY:!0,speed:0},c=a("#backstretch"),g=c.data("settings")||t;c.data("settings");var o,m,r,n,h,f,k,j;b&&"object"==typeof b&&a.extend(g,b);b&&"function"==typeof b&&(l=b);a(document).ready(function(){var b=window,d=navigator.userAgent,c=navigator.platform,e=d.match(/AppleWebKit\/([0-9]+)/),e=!!e&&e[1],f=d.match(/Fennec\/([0-9]+)/),f=!!f&&f[1],g=d.match(/Opera Mobi\/([0-9]+)/),h=!!g&&g[1],i=d.match(/MSIE ([0-9]+)/),i=!!i&&i[1];o=(m=!((-1<c.indexOf("iPhone")||-1<c.indexOf("iPad")||-1<c.indexOf("iPod"))&&e&&534>e||b.operamini&&"[object OperaMini]"==={}.toString.call(b.operamini)||g&&7458>h||-1<d.indexOf("Android")&&e&&533>e||f&&6>f||"palmGetResource"in window&&e&&534>e||-1<d.indexOf("MeeGo")&&-1<d.indexOf("NokiaBrowser/8.5.0")||i&&6>=i))?a(window):a(document);r=m&&window.innerHeight;s()});return this}})(jQuery);
//]]>
</script>
<script>
//<![CDATA[
var images = [
 "Image URL",
 "Image URL",
 "Image URL",
 "Image URL",
 "Image URL",
  ];

  $(images).each(function(){
 $('<img/>')[0].src = this;
  });
  var index = 0;
$.backstretch(images[index], {speed: 1000});
  var slideshow = setInterval(function() {
  index = (index >= images.length - 1) ? 0 : index + 1;
    $.backstretch(images[index]);
  }, 5000);
//]]>
</script>
Here add the URLs of the images that will be the background of your blog.
If you would like to add more pictures, just add after the var images = [ another line like this:
 "Image URL",
The images will be changing in the order you have added them, if you want these to appear in a random order, then change the second part of the code with this:
<script>
//<![CDATA[
var images=new Array();
images[ 1 ]="Image URL";
images[ 2 ]="Image URL";
images[ 3 ]="Image URL";
images[ 4 ]="Image URL";
images[ 5 ]="Image URL";

  Array.prototype.shuffle = function() {
  var len = this.length;
  var i = len;
  while (i--) {
  var p = parseInt(Math.random()*len);
  var t = this[i];
  this[i] = this[p];
  this[p] = t;
  }
};

  images.shuffle();
  $(images).each(function(){
 $('<img/>')[0].src = this;
  });
  var index = 0;
$.backstretch(images[index], {speed: 1000});
  var slideshow = setInterval(function() {
  index = (index >= images.length - 1) ? 0 : index + 1;
    $.backstretch(images[index]);
  }, 5000);
//]]>
</script>
You can also add more pictures by adding a line like this:
images[ 6 ]="Image URL";
But you will see that in this case there are some consecutive numbers in blue, so if you add another such as 6, then the next one should be 7, etc..

In both cases you can change the duration of each image which is in the 5000 value that is at the end of the script.
The advantage of this slideshow in the blog's background is that images are automatically resized to the size of the monitor, so that, no matter of the resolution, it should look good.

It is worth remembering that if you are using Scriptaculous, you have to make some changes, and if you already use jQuery, should leave only one version.

Posted On // Leave a Comment
jGlideMenu is a vertical menu that can be dragged and dropped so that the reader can place it anywhere, and in addition, he can browse through the tabs in a very peculiar manner that comes with a sliding effect giving a sexy touch.

One of the advantages is that it can store a large number of links and can be removed anytime if we want.

2) Now paste before ]]></b:skin> these styles:

display: block;
}
.jGM_reset a:hover {
color: #fff !important; /* Color of the "Home" link on mouseover */
background: #4D4E67;
}
3) Now go to Layout and paste the structure of the menu inside a HTML/Javascript gadget:
<div class="jGM_box" id="jGlide_001">

<!-- Here all the links of the first level -->
<ul id="tile_001" class="jGlide_001_tiles" title="Menu" alt="Description of the first level">
<li rel="tile_002">Link 1</li>
<li rel="tile_003">Link 2</li>
<li rel="tile_004">Link 3</li>
<li rel="tile_006">Link 4</li>
<li rel="tile_007">Link 5</li>
<li><a href="URL address">Link 6</a></li>
<li><a href="URL address">Link 7</a></li>
<li><a href="URL address">Link 8</a></li>
<li><a href="URL address">Link 9</a></li>
<li><a href="URL address">Link 10</a></li>
<li><a href="URL address">Link 11</a></li>
</ul>

<!-- Here all the links of the second level -->
<ul id="tile_002" class="jGlide_001_tiles" title="Menu" alt="Description of the second level">
<li rel="tile_005">Link 1.1</li>
<li><a href="URL address">Link 1.2</a></li>
<li><a href="URL address">Link 1.3</a></li>
<li><a href="URL address">Link 1.4</a></li>
</ul>

<ul id="tile_003" class="jGlide_001_tiles" title="Menu" alt="Description of the second level">
<li><a href="URL address">Link 2.1</a></li>
<li rel="tile_008">Link 2.2</li>
<li><a href="URL address">Link 2.3</a></li>
</ul>

<ul id="tile_004" class="jGlide_001_tiles" title="Menu" alt="Description of the second level">
<li><a href="URL address">Link 3.1</a></li>
<li><a href="URL address">Link 3.2</a></li>
<li><a href="URL address">Link 3.3</a></li>
</ul>

<ul id="tile_006" class="jGlide_001_tiles" title="Menu" alt="Description of the second level">
<li><a href="URL address">Link 4.1</a></li>
<li><a href="URL address">Link 4.2</a></li>
<li><a href="URL address">Link 4.3</a></li>
</ul>

<ul id="tile_007" class="jGlide_001_tiles" title="Menu" alt="Description of the second level">
<li><a href="URL address">Link 5.1</a></li>
<li><a href="URL address">Link 5.2</a></li>
</ul>

<!-- Here all the links of the third level -->
<ul id="tile_005" class="jGlide_001_tiles" title="Menu" alt="Description of the third level">
<li><a href="URL address">Link 1.1.1</a></li>
<li><a href="URL address">Link 1.1.2</a></li>
</ul>

<ul id="tile_008" class="jGlide_001_tiles" title="Menu" alt="Description of the third level">
<li><a href="URL address">Link 1.2.1</a></li>
<li><a href="URL address">Link 1.2.2</a></li>
</ul>

</div>
Add the URLs of the links and the names of the tabs and that's it.
If you want to add more links to the first level, then add another line like this:
<li><a href="URL address">Link 12</a></li>
If you want to add another level to the link, then the line should be like this:
<li rel="tile_0010">Link 5</li>
Then in the area of the second or third level, add a piece like this:
<ul id="tile_0010" class="jGlide_001_tiles" title="Menu" alt="Description of the second level">
<li><a href="URL address">Link 5.1</a></li>
<li><a href="Url address">Link 5.2</a></li>
</ul>
Here you should keep something in mind, if you look closely the link takes the REL attribute which must be the same as the ID we put on the second level, these IDs should not repeat and always be unique.
Yes, it sounds complicated, but once you understand the concept, you'll see that is actually pretty simple.
In the area of the styles, there are the parts that can be customized. If you want the menu to be static, let's say you want to add it in the sidebar, then delete the first code of the script that is in italics. And in the CSS styles, remove this part:
position: absolute; /* Change absolute with fixed if you want it to float */
top: 50px; /* Distance above */
right: 760px; /* Distance to the right */
When there are many links then, there will be showing some arrows, so when you mouseover them, it will show the rest of the links either up or down.

Throughout the menu structure we can change the Menu name and the descriptions as well.

As this menu is made with JQuery, it is recommended to verify to have only one version of it.
